Black staining is caused by the growth of mold/algae/fungus that land on your roof, (Staining is not caused by pollution, soot or jet exhaust). These spores need three things to grow: heat, moisture and some kind of nutrient. The nutrient comes from dirt and the shingle itself, primarily the limestone filler used in manufacturing the granules. Once attached to a roof, they feed on the dead organic matter used to make the shingle. The more the moss or algae grows the more moisture it will hold, keeping the roof's surface wet, which, in turn, causes rot. As the mold breaks down the asphalt shingle, the ceramic granules protecting the surface of the shingle are loosened and begin to fall off. This causes the roof to deteriorate prematurely and diminishes the roof's effectiveness. The roof mold will reduce the life of your roof, diminish your home's curb appeal and increase your home cooling expenses. If not treated, its roots work their way through the shingles and into the wooden decking causing tremendous damage on and underneath the shingles.

Traditional roof cleaning methods have used high pressure washing and/or hazardous chemical ingredients such as bleach, sodium hydroxide (Lye), chlorine, or acid. These techniques could damage the integrity of the roof, your landscaping & wildlife, and even cause harm to siding, brick, windows, gutters awnings, pets and humans. Chlorine type cleaners may remove some of the stains, but the roots still remain. They grow back quickly and the stains reappear in no time. We know this from experience - we've used bleaches, chlorine products, and yes, even lye(sodium hydroxide). They are nasty products to use… for us and the property owner.
